Seasonal Flu Vaccine !
It's that time of year again! Fall is right around the corner and it's time to starting thinking about protecting ourselves from the flu. Getting vaccinated against influenza, or the flu is it is more commonly called, is the only proven way to prevent influenza.
Hartzell's Pharmacy Vaccine Clinic will be providing three influenza vaccines this fall - the flu shot, the nasal flu vaccine (FluMist), and Fluzone HD or High Dose.
- Inactivated influenza vaccine or the "Flu" shot - this vaccine is recommended for all individuals 6 months of age and older. Vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of severe influenza and their close contacts, including healthcare personnel and close contacts of children younger than 6 months.
- FluMist or the nasal flu vaccine - this vaccine is recommended for all healthy individuals 2 to 49 years of age. FluMist is the only non-injectable form of the flu vaccine and has been shown to reduce the incidence of ear (otitis media) infections in children.
- Fluzone HD - this vaccine is especially designed for individuals 65 years of age and older. It is a more concentrated inactivated influenza vaccine that offers superior protection against the flu for older individuals verse the regular inactivated "flu shot".
For more information on both inactivated influenza vaccines or flu shots you can read the Vaccine Information Sheet (or VIS) here. For more information on FluMist, you can access the VIS here.
At Hartzell's, flu shots (the inactivated vaccine) will be available for those 18 years of age and older without a prescription. Hartzell's will also have available Fluzone HD for patients 65 years of age and older without a prescription. FluMist, the nasal flu vaccine, will be available to all individuals 2 to 49 years of age, however patients 2 to 17 years of age will require a prescription.
