The doors to Hartzell's Pharmacy Inc. opened for the first time in August 1968. Bob Hartzell purchased Sterner's Pharmacy at Front and Pine Street. Though the pharmacy has had various names and owners through the years, it has served the borough of Catasauqua, Pennsylvania since 1874.
Many changes were made in the 40 years since Mr. Hartzell first purchased the business. Most notable is the address at which business has been conducted. The store has changed location three times in it's 40 year existance, with the last being in March 2003 when it settled at 300 American Street. The new home for Hartzell's Pharmacy Inc. allowed it to better accommodate it's growing medical equipment and supply business (Hartzell's Home Medical Equipment) and expand many of it's unique services.
The new location also allowed for the creation of a "new" pharmacy, Catasauqua Compounding Pharmacy. Though Hartzell's has done compounds for years before Catasauqua Compounding existed, the need for larger space and a lab to better meet the needs of the staff and the jobs they perform created the need for the new business.
Hartzell's continued it's expansion by opening one of the first pharmacy based immunization clinics in the Lehigh Valley. The clinic provides travel health information for international travels and vaccinations, such as the flu shot, tetatnus shot, shigles vaccine, and many more, to adults.
The most notable change at Hartzell's came in the summer of 2007, when Mr. Hartzell welcomed his son, Vincent, and daugther-in-law, Kristen, into the business. Vincent and Kristen both came to the family business after completing pharmacy school at Wilkes University and post-graduate studies in Virginia. Hartzell's, now with a second generation to continue the family business, looks forward to celebrate many more anniversaries.
All during the month of October, Hartzell's Pharmacy will be celebrating it's 40th birthday. Guest speakers, sales, specials, and give-aways are scheduled all month long. Make sure to check out the event calender at www.hartzells.com for details on all the anniversary events, including dates and times.
From 1968 when Mr. Hartzell had one employee to 2008 when the company boasts over 45 employees one thing has remained constant - the customer always comes first. The entire staff and Hartzell's family truly appreciates our customers and thanks them for their commitment and patronage over the years.
